Is your R22 system being phased Out?
What is R22?
R22 is a type of refrigerant
What is a Refrigerant?
All air conditioning units contain refrigerant, it is the substance travelling through the copper pipework between the evaporator and condenser (commonly the indoor and outdoor unit). It is required for the cooling/heating operation to take place.
R22 Phase Out
01/01/2010 – The use of virgin R22 refrigerant will be prohibited in the maintenance and servicing of air conditioning equipment.
01/01/2015 – The use of recycled R22 refrigerant will be prohibited in the maintenance and servicing of air conditioning equipment.
If your air conditioning system was installed before 2003, it is likely to be an R22 system.
It is estimated that over 40% of air conditioning systems currently installed in the UK are R22 systems.
Short Term – Refrigerant replacement:
The R22 refrigerant can be replaced with a newer drop in refrigerant, but due to the poor availability of R22 air conditioning replacement parts, it’s potentially a high risk option. If a component was to fail which is no longer available, it would mean the entire system would need to be replaced.
Long Term – System replacement:
Newer inverter systems can immediately reduce energy consumption by up to 50%, We can evaluate the condition of the currently installed pipework and electrical supply to advise if they can be re-used. This will vastly reduce the price of system replacement.
